The Masked Singer: Group B Playoffs – Spectacular Seahorse…and Everyone Else

The remaining contestants in Group B sang their hearts out to move to the next round. Several of the contestants easily cemented their way even into the finals and some fell slightly flat. If there were any clues in the opening of the show, I didn’t really pick up on any of them and was no closer to guessing who is wearing which mask. I liked seeing Joel McHale again as a guest panelist. I’m still rooting for him to be a permanent panelist.

Now onto the performances:

Serpent

Song: “The Bones” by Maren Morris

Thoughts: I think that the Serpent has the potential to be in the finals. His voice is smooth and the songs that he chooses showcase his vocal range well. The Serpent’s costume is one of my favorites that has ever been on the show; the tentacles’ movement is just fascinating to me.

My Guess: The clues showed that he could barely make rent at one point and had taken a job doing manual labor. There was also a pink Cadillac that he was riding in as well as a croissant trophy. None of these clues really helped me to point in the right direction. I’m sticking with my previous guess that this is Brian McKnight, and this is only because of the voice and the height (Brian McKnight is 6’4” and the Serpent is towering over Nick Cannon, who is 6’0”).

Judges’ Guesses: Nicole had guessed Brian McKnight. Joel guessed Jesse Williams and Jenny guessed this could be Taye Diggs. All these guesses are good guesses, but I’m going to stick with Nicole (no pun intended to the Pussycat Dolls’ song “Stick Wit U”).

Crocodile

Song: “Toxic” by Britney Spears

Thoughts: Crocodile’s performance was unexpected, but I wanted more of whatever he gave us. The voice is good, but I’m not so sure we will see him in the finals.

My Guess: The clues really didn’t help me with this guess, either. There was a number five, a skull and crossbones flag, an American flag, and oranges on trees. The oranges could be a nod to Florida. When the Crocodile started singing this week’s song, I instantly thought that this was Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys. The “shazam” reference in the clue package almost made me think that Zachary Levi could be the Crocodile, but I don’t think it’s him. I don’t believe his singing voice is not that high.

Judges’ Guesses: Nicole guessed that this is Adam Lambert, which could also be the case. Ken guessed that this could be Lenny Kravitz. This is not an outlandish guess, but I don’t think it’s him. Joel guessed this is Harry Connick, Jr.

Baby Alien

Song: “It’s Time” by Imagine Dragons

Thoughts: I thought the performance was okay. There wasn’t anything special about it.

My Guess: I think that this could be a comedian that works with puppets, which only really points to Jeff Dunham. If this isn’t Jeff Dunham, I could also see this being Jason Segal, who worked with puppets in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Judges’ Guesses: Joel guessed that this is Eric Bana, Nicole guessed this is Sasha Baren Cohen and Ken guessed this was Taylor Lautner. I don’t think any of these people are under the Baby Alien mask.

Whatchamacallit

Song: “Money Maker” by Ludacris (feat. Pharrell Williams)

Thoughts: I also thought that this performance was okay. I’m not a fan of the contestants that rap every week. It makes you look like a one trick pony and subject to an early elimination.

My Guess: This person has had rough patches and got a call that shook his world. His mother was in bad shape, but she told him to keep going. There was also a dime in the clue package. Again, none of these clues helped me. The rapping sounded a little like Kenan Thompson. However, whomever is under the Whatchamacallit mask is taller than Nick Cannon and Kenan Thompson is not. So, I have no idea.

Judges’ Guesses: Jenny said that this is Cam Newton, Robin said that this is Terrell Owens, and Ken said that this is Armie Hammer. The only guess from the judges that had any weight with me was Terrell Owens.

Seahorse

Song: “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion

Thoughts: This performance was just…wow! I agree with the judges that she is giving Sun a run for her money. Seahorse will no doubt be in the finals.

My Guess: The voice sounds like Carrie Underwood, but like I said before, she is too busy to do this show. The clues included the country and a pair of Daisy Dukes, which leads me to believe that this could Jessica Simpson, who played Daisy Duke in the newer Dukes of Hazzard movie and is from Texas. However, her voice sounds nothing like this contestant. In fact, I think this contestant is better than Jessica Simpson from a vocal standpoint.

Judges’ Guesses: Robin guessed this is Bebe Rexha, Joel guessed this could be Jessica Simpson, and Jenny guessed that this could be Camila Cabello. The only guess that had any weight was Joel’s guess.

I really wasn’t sure who we would see be eliminated. I didn’t think the Whatchamacallit was good, but I didn’t think it was bad enough to be eliminated. I was a little sad to see the Baby Alien go, but excited to see who this person was. Jenny said that this was Nick Kroll, Ken said this was Freddie Prinze, Jr., Robin said that this was Jason Biggs, Nicole said Jeff Dunham, and Joel said Eric Bana. The judges were completely off the mark. The Baby Alien ended up being Mark Sanchez, a retired quarterback who once played for the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles (go birds!).

We will see a whole new group of singers next week with Group C, including Broccoli, Jellyfish, Lips, Mushroom and Squiggly Monster. A dose of vegetables, great singing, and psychedelic costumes…yes please!
