We were introduced to Group C on this week’s episode of The Masked Singer. I mean, these costumes and masks were something else. I know most things don’t make sense on this show, but this was a whole other level. Their performances were slightly mediocre compared to the other groups with one contestant shining over the others. Let’s get to the performances:
Song: “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” by Creedance Clearwater Revival
Thoughts: I thought the performance was okay. I don’t expect this person to be in the finals, but they had a decent singing voice. I also thought the voice sounded familiar. I do agree that he looks like “Beetlejuice on steroids”.
My Guess: I honestly have no idea who this could be. I wonder if this person played a doctor on TV, hence the stethoscope appearing in the clue package. Another part of me is also thinking this is a politician as they said they were the “voice of the people”. The only politician that is a doctor that I can think of is Rand Paul, but I don’t know if that is anywhere close to who this is. If this person were a doctor on TV, it could be someone like Donald Faison or Zach Braff.
Judges’ Guesses: Robin guessed this is Ray Romano, Jenny guessed Al Franken, and Ken guessed Dr. Fauci. One of the other judges guessed Brad Garrett too, which could be the case. I would hope it would not be Dr. Fauci as we need him to lead the way and figure out ways to get us out of this hellhole that is the pandemic, even though most of what he says is doom and gloom, but I digress.
Song: “This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell
Thoughts: I was pleasantly surprised that this was a male singing and not a female. Their voice was the best out of the bunch, and I think that Mushroom has the potential to make it to the finals.
My Guess: My first guess just based on the voice was D’Angelo (remember “How Does It Feel?” with him spinning around on a chair nude?). However, none of the clues helped me to lean in one direction. I do wonder if this person is someone known for being androgynous given that the Mushroom is a feminine costume and the voice that we hear is a male’s.
Judges’ Guesses: Nicole guessed Donald Glover, Ken guessed Usher and Jenny guessed Frank Ocean. I could see this being Usher or Frank Ocean, but I’m almost positive that Donald Glover is shorter than Nick Cannon, which would rule him out considering that the person in that costume is taller than Nick.
Song: “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Fergie
Thoughts: The judges were surprised and impressed with her voice, but I disagree. I thought her voice was okay, but nothing to write home about.
My Guess: There was a book called “The Little(ish) Jellyfish”, which made me think that this could be one of the sisters from the show Black-ish (Yara Shahidi or Marsai Martin). The voice is someone younger and could be a child star, given the clues given to us (baby powder, tiara, castle, etc.).
Judges’ Guesses: Robin said this was Gabby Douglas, Ken said Chloe Grace Moretz, and Nicole said Sofia Ritchie. I’m not sure any of these people would do this show, but weirder things have happened on the show.
Song: “House Is Rockin’/Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” by Stevie Ray Vaughn/Jerry Lee Lewis
Thoughts: The performance was fun, but I wasn’t impressed by his voice.
My Guess: I think that this person is older, given the sound of his voice. The clue package alluded to him doing dance moves on TikTok, a car wash and a swing. I also think this person is potentially a comedian. Honestly, I have no idea.
Judges’ Guesses: Nicole guessed Bill Murray, Jenny guessed Howie Mandel, and Robin guessed Steve Guttenberg. I think that Howie Mandel is the closest guess that I have, but I guess it could also be Steve Guttenberg.
Song: “Native New Yorker” by Odyssey
Thoughts: THIS.PERSON.COULD.NOT. SING. Period. I wondered whether the person under the mask was trying to sabotage themselves and be eliminated first.
My Guess: I think this person is a comedian. She mentioned cheetah skates and having strong opinions but speaking her truth. My first impression guess was that this could be Kathy Griffin or someone like Yvette Nicole Brown. Kathy Griffin is always transparent about her life and Yvette Nicole Brown has had guest appearances on The View.
Judges’ Guesses: Robin said this could Sandra Bernhard, Jenny and Nicole said Wendy Williams, and Ken said Allison Janney.
Now for the eliminations. The Lips ended up being sent home, which was not a surprise to anyone. The first impression guesses were as follows: Ken said Mariah Carey (hahahaha), Robin said Sandra Bernhard, and Jenny and Nicole said Wendy Williams. Ken was the only one that changed his guess to Allison Janney before the Lips’ identity was unmasked. Wendy Williams was then revealed as Lips. I should have known that this was her and I’m mad at myself that I didn’t guess her. Oh well.
Next week will be the Group C Playoffs. I thought the only contestant that is probably immune from elimination is Mushroom, so it will be interesting to see who gets eliminated next week as all of them seem to be on the chopping block.
