The remaining three contestants from Group A sang their hearts out to move forward to the final six on this week’s episode of The Masked Singer. All the performances were great and really showed how much each celebrity wants to win. Most openings to this show don’t really make me excited to watch the rest of it (not that I don’t like the show, I just know what to expect weekly). However, the opening pumped me up to watch the show. I also thought Ken’s bit about getting prepared to guess the celebrities was funny. Niecy Nash was the guest judge this week, and I was impressed by her. Some of the guest judges don’t have the best guesses, but she seemed like she thought out her guesses more thoroughly than other guest judges and gave a little bit more comedic relief to the show. The Sun, Snow Owls and Popcorn first performed to the song “Raise Your Glass” by Pink and you could really see who a strong vocalist is in the group and who isn’t. The individual performances were good too. Let’s get to them:
Song: “Piece of My Heart” by Janis Joplin
Thoughts: The Sun continues to surprise me every week. She is one of my favorites this season and I’ve said this before; I think she will win this season.
My Guess: I’m still thinking this is Leann Rimes and some of the clues cemented that guess. There were blue wind chimes, which would point to her song “Blue”. The clue package also talked about a road trip her and her significant other took, and I investigated this; Leann Rimes has taken a road trip in the last 5 years. In addition, her significant other said at least one of her singles was a gold record, which is something that Leann Rimes has achieved several times throughout her career.
Judges’ Guesses: Ken said this is Katherine McPhee, which was what Robin had guessed in previous weeks. Niecy said this could be Jewel based on showing a “postcard” in Alaska in the clue package, which could also be the case. Jenny said Demi Lovato, and I don’t think this is the case considering even though we have been locked down, she’s still too busy.
Song: “The Prayer” by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion
Thoughts: I was surprised by how good they were. The Snow Owls are not the best vocally, but they really showed how much they want that Golden Mask.
My Guess: There was a spaceship, horse, a replica of the Parthenon, and a Roy Rogers. The person close to the Snow Owls said they are married too. Well, that eliminates my guess of Julianne and Derek Hough. I changed my guess to Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks, which is who I thought the woman sounded like. I also believe that Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks live in Nashville, which is where the replica of the Parthenon is. Some of the clues helped, but most were lost on me.
Judges’ Guesses: Niecy said this is Kimberly and Brad Paisley, Robin said this is Amy Grant and Vince Gill, and Ken said this is Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman. Sit down, Ken. Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman have been separated for the last three years. They don’t want to have anything to do with each other.
Song: “Domino” by Jessie J
Thoughts: This performance wasn’t my favorite, but I still thought it was good.
My Guess: There were a pair of sheering scissors and her friend giving the clues was dressed as a queen. She also mentioned that her friend has been on the show and that one of the judges has guessed who she is. I’m leaning towards Cyndi Lauper based on the singing and speaking voice, but I’m not sure if she has been guessed before. This could also be Nicole Richie.
Judges’ Guesses: Jenny said this is Taylor Dayne, which I don’t think is it since her voice is a little deeper. Niecy guessed Cyndi Lauper and I think she could be right. Ken said Anita Baker…ehh.
Unfortunately, the Snow Owls and Popcorn had to “smack down” to keep their spot in the competition and move on to the next round. I wasn’t surprised to see these contestants in the bottom two. The Snow Owls and Popcorn had stronger performances during the smackdown than during the first round. Alas, this ended up being the Snow Owls’ swan song.
I wasn’t surprised to see the Snow Owls eliminated. I predicted at the beginning of the episode that they would be eliminated since I didn’t think that they were as strong as Sun and Popcorn (based on the performances this week, I would have been okay with Popcorn going home too). Robin and Jenny guessed this is Amy Grant and Vince Gill, Nicole guessed this is Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black, Ken stuck with his answer and said this is Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman (whatever), and Niecy said this is Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna. Nicole ended up being the only one that was right, giving her the advantage to potentially win the Golden Ear Trophy at the end of the season. Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black were revealed as Snow Owls. I’m not familiar with their career, so I wouldn’t have had any idea about this being them. My guessing has been rusty this season, but it usually improves by the end of the season when it matters.
Group B will have their chance to perform to the very last drop last week. I think that Whatchamacallit and Crocodile will most likely be the ones unsafe from elimination. We will see who the remaining hombres in the saloon will move forward to the final six.
