The Masked Singer, Season 5 Premiere: Cha-Cha-Cha-Changes

New year, new semi-annual Masked Singer season. The producers must have felt like the show needed some different spice to it, so several changes were announced. There is a wild card and a disruptor in the bunch, also known as Clued-l Doo. Yes, it looks like there is a new host, but I think she is temporary (Thank God) while Nick Cannon recovered from COVID-19 (at least that’s what we’re being told; there are several on social media that have speculated that Nick Cannon is the disruptor this season).

I’m not sure whether I was pre-occupied or what, but this season premiere didn’t do it for me. The changes really didn’t make it much more exciting. I’m hopeful for the talent and think there are a couple of ringers in this group, but I think we have yet to see the winner of this season. Let’s get to the performances from last night:

Russian Dolls

Song: “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson

Thoughts: This mask surprised me. I didn’t expect to see two people singing and had to re-watch this performance to grasp the fact that there were actually two people in the first place.

My Guess: I really had no idea who it was the first time I watched their performance. I listened to it again and my best guess is that it is two of the Hanson brothers. Which ones? I have no idea. If it isn’t them, it’s a famous male singing duo.

Judges’ Guesses: Ken guessed that this is Gwen Stefani and a member of No Doubt. Is she even associated with No Doubt anymore? Jenny said that this could be Boyz II Men, but their voices are more soulful and silkier, so that eliminates them. Nicole said that this could be Matthew Morrison and Kevin McHale from Glee. Ehh…

Song: “You Make My Dreams Come True” by Hall and Oates

Thoughts: This was an okay performance.  There wasn’t really anything special about it.

My Guess: There were several clues about being an actor, producer and even a singer. This person also was on the talk show circuit, and the clue package had a teddy bear sitting on a couch. All signs were pointing to the fact that this could be Seth MacFarlane.

Judges’ Guesses: Robin agreed with my guess that this was Seth MacFarlane. Ken guessed that this was Jay Leno, but I think Jay Leno is much taller than the stature of the Snail. Nicole said that this could be Jimmy Kimmel or Adam Sandler.

Song: “Listen to Your Heart” by Roxette

Thoughts: The voice sounds incredibly familiar. I think I may have listened to this person while I was growing up.

My Guess: I’m not sure who this is. I have a feeling that this is a former child star that has become successful as an adult. I need more clues to confirm who I think it really is.

Judges’ Guesses: Ken said this is Kristin Chenoweth. I know her voice has a higher pitch. Next. Robin said this is Jennifer Love Hewitt. Nicole said this is Hilary Duff.

Song: “Wild Thing” by The Troggs

Thoughts: What in the world did I just watch? I know this is not American Idol (which I don’t watch), but seriously. What was that?

My Guess: This person has had a rough past and was previously in jail. They have decided to do good since they have done wrong. My husband said this could be Danny Trejo. I’m sure he won’t mind if I take his guess.

Judges’ Guesses: Nicole said this is Gary Busey, Nick Nolte, or Sammy Hager (my first guess was Nick Nolte). Ken said this is Mike Tyson. Ummm…no. Robin said this is Danny Devito. This person is too tall to be Danny Devito.

Song: “Never Too Much” by Luther Vandross

Thoughts: This person’s voice was so soulful. Nicole said it best: “buttah”.

My Guess: My first inkling was that this could be MC Hammer. I understand he is a rapper, but it’s always possible. If this is not MC Hammer, it could be a comedian that’s had a long career in Hollywood.

Judges’ Guesses: Nicole said this is Jamie Foxx. Ken said this is Lionel Ritchie. Robin said this is Ginuwine. All decent guesses.

And now…the first elimination. I had a feeling that this would be between Raccoon and Snail. Alas, the Snail was too slow to make it to the finish line and was the first to go. The guesses were as follows: Robin stuck with Seth MacFarlane, Ken said this is Jay Leno, Jenny said this could be Ted Cruz, and Nicole said this could be Billy Crystal.

Lo and behold, the Snail was…Kermit the Frog! This was one of the most surprising reveals of the entire series, but one of the most refreshing. Everyone loves Kermit the Frog and I think he (and his puppeteer) did a great job throwing their voice to make it sound like a country singer.

Another five masked celebrities will perform next week. Wonder if we will meet the winner in this upcoming group?
