Season five of The Masked Singer didn’t really start out with a bang. The Group B Premiere did, though.
While the costumes were eye-catching and interesting to say the least, it was the level of talent in this group that grabbed my attention. The first performance was explosive, there were a couple of decent performances in the middle, and the ending took it to the next level. Let’s get to it:
Performances
Black Swan
Song: “Barracuda” by Heart
Thoughts: This person has a powerful voice. I am not surprised if Black Swan ends up in the finals.
My Guess: She mentioned that she was the rarest in the bunch and that she likes to ruffle feathers. There was also a chess piece, the number “5”, the letter “X”, and a red card. One of my first thoughts was that this could someone from the cast of the Real Housewives franchise. However, there is also a possibility that this could be a member of Fifth Harmony (hence the number “5” and the fact that they appeared on The X Factor). I need more information to come up with a concrete guess.
Judges’ Guesses: Jenny said this could be Camila Cabello, Ken said this could be Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nicole said this could be Leona Lewis. All not bad guesses.
Grandpa Monster
Song: “Mambo No. 5” by Lou Bega
Thoughts: It’s clear that this person is just doing the show for kicks. The voice sounded young even though the costume/mask makes him look “old”.
My Guess: This person said that they are a controversial figure and a “dumb punk”. There were also several appearances of the number “6”: there was a football play in the shape of the number and a weight that said “6.2 tons” (probably his height). My first thought was that this could be a rapper from the 1980’s or 1990’s, like Vanilla Ice. However, I’m thinking that this could be a football player. I’m not sure why, but Terrell Owens is coming to mind for me.
Judges’ Guesses: Robin said this is Johnny Manziel, Jenny said this is The Miz, and Ken said this is Scott Disick. Robin’s guess could very well be right.
Chameleon
Song: “Ride Wit Me” by Nelly
Thoughts: The performance was just okay. There was nothing special, but I’ve seen worse on the show.
My Guess: He mentioned that he had a father that was in show business. There were also clues of “007” and “23”. I thought that could be Jaden Smith initially, but when Robin mentioned his guess, I’m almost positive that he is right. The voice was so familiar, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
Judges’ Guesses: Robin said this is Redfoo from LMFAO, Ken said this is Dwight Howard and Nicole said this is Nick Cannon.
Phoenix
Song: “Tik Tok” by Kesha
Thoughts: Again, this performance was okay. There was nothing special.
My Guess: I couldn’t place who this person was initially. However, once I heard Jenny’s guess, it all made sense and I was confident that the Phoenix was this person. The number “76” appeared, which symbolized 1976, and this was when this person appeared in the Olympics. In addition, they said they had a lot of children and that they weren’t living their truth.
Judges’ Guesses: Jenny said this is Caitlyn Jenner. Ken said this is RuPaul. Nicole said this could be Tim Gunn or Jonathan Van Ness. Jenny was right on the money.
Piglet
Song: “Speechless” by Dan & Shay
Thoughts: I was extremely impressed with this person. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up in the semi-finals or the finals.
My Guess: I think this is Nick Lachey. Initially, I thought this could be a contestant from The Bachelor, like a Nick Viall, but the voice is too distinct. The clues that alluded to the relationship trouble he experienced with Jessica Simpson in the early 2000’s made too much sense not to be him.
Judges’ Guesses: Ken said this is Adam Lambert and Nicole said this could be either Charlie Puth or Liam Hemsworth.
Unfortunately, we had to eliminate one of these great performers. Lo and behold, it was the Phoenix, which was not surprising. The judges’ guesses were initially the following: Robin said this was Laverne Cox, Jenny and Ken said this is Caitlyn Jenner, and Nicole said this is Perez Hilton. Ken changed his guess to RuPaul and Nicole said this is Jonathan Van Ness, while Robin and Jenny stuck with their guesses.
Now we reveal that the Phoenix is…Caitlyn Jenner!
Next week will see the appearance of wildcard contestants, which is new for this season. Wonder how this is going to work?
