Top contenders for the Golden Mask, hyperventilation, and an unexpected twist. This was the Group B Finals on the fifth season of The Masked Singer in a nutshell. Let’s get to the performances:
Song: “How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston
Thoughts: She has such a strong voice and has proven that she is a versatile performer.
My Guess: I said this was JoJo previously, but I’m starting to change my mind. I think that this could be a member of Fifth Harmony, but I can’t place which one. There was multiple 10’s that appeared in the clue package, which leads me to believe that this person became famous from a reality competition show (Fifth Harmony came to be from the U.S. version of The X Factor). The voice sounds familiar no matter whether this is a member of Fifth Harmony, JoJo, or otherwise.
Judges’ Guesses: Robin said this is Victoria Justice, Jenny said this is Emily Osment, and Ken said this is Brenda Song. I think the judges are wrong.
Song: “7 Years” by Lukas Graham
Thoughts: Piglet’s performance was so emotional. It was one of my favorites of the night.
My Guess: I’m positive that this is Nick Lachey, and the clue package confirmed this. He talked about getting grilled, which was something that happened post-breakup with Jessica Simpson. Also, he said that an unexpected person came into his life that caused him to become a family man. Nick Lachey has three children with Vanessa Lachey (Minnillo) (one of which is named Phoenix, which starts with a “P”; this was one of three dog tags in his item from home).
Judges’ Guesses: Robin said this is Kevin Richardson, Jenny said AJ McLean, and Ken said this is Zayn Malik. How do you not hear this?
Song: “Give It to Me” by Rick James
Thoughts: This performance was good, but not my favorite thus far. I felt so bad that he had to step offstage to take a breather. The costume is heavy and can be restrictive, and it’s a wonder a contestant has not passed out in the five seasons this show has been on the air.
My Guess: I still think this is Bobby Brown, but it’s only because of the clues from last week. The clues from this week didn’t really add anything for me.
Judges’ Guesses: Jenny said this is Bobby Brown and Ken said this is Shawn Stockman. If this is a member of Boyz II Men, it’s probably Wanya Morris, not Shawn Stockman.
Song: “Hip Hop” by Dead Prez
Thoughts: I’m not a fan of contestants rapping on the show more than once as this is a singing competition, but this performance was one of my favorite rap performances of the entire five seasons.
My Guess: I’m going to steal my husband’s guess again, and he said this is Wiz Khalifa. Chameleon referenced his son, and he has a 7-year-old son with Amber Rose. He also said he practices martial arts, which is the case for him as well (he practices Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts). It is apparent that Chameleon is tall, and Wiz Khalifa is 6’4” according to IMDB.
Judges’ Guesses: Robin guessed this is Wiz Khalifa, Jenny said this is Machine Gun Kelly and Nicole said this is Waka Flocka Flame.
Song: “Candy Girl” by New Edition
Thoughts: The clues in the clue package threw me off. I wasn’t expecting to hear the high-pitched voice based on how rough and tough the clues made him out to be.
My Guess: I think this could be a football player, comedian, or boy bander. They alluded to a bowl that had “Super” on it, which could be someone that has played in the Super Bowl. Something is telling me that this could Terrell Owens. There was another clue from his home on a whiteboard that read “Live from New York, It’s Saturday Night” and could allude to this being a cast member or guest host. I’m not sure.
Judges’ Guesses: Jenny said this is Chris Rock and Ken said this is Chris Tucker.
An unexpected twist came at the end of the show in the form of Niecy Nash choosing who would go home. She chose for the Bulldog to be eliminated and he was ordered to remove his mask immediately without the judges guessing who this could be.
Stunningly, the Bulldog ended up being…Nick Cannon. I didn’t guess that it was him until he was seconds away from removing his mask. This could have been a staged event that only Nick Cannon, Niecy Nash and select producers knew about prior to the reveal, but I don’t want to be conspiratorial. You have to love when things are pre-planned, and it seems as if it was conjured up by the producers for shock value. Isn’t reality television just the best?
We will see Nick Cannon’s return and the Group A Finals next week. I like Niecy Nash as an actress, but not necessarily as a host of The Masked Singer. I will be glad to have Nick Cannon back to banter with Ken. You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone for a couple of weeks.
