The Masked Singer, Season 5: Semi-Finals – Cluck, Cluck, WTF?!

The trophy is so close, it’s as if the contestants can taste it (don’t do that, though; it will taste like metal and that just tastes nasty). I’ve never seen such a yearning to win by the contestants as I’ve seen this season. We got the chills, fired up the bacon (and chicken), and watched nature’s creatures deliver punches with their performances.

Darius Rucker (a.k.a. Hootie) was added to the list of obscure, but welcome guest judges to the panel. I would welcome him back in a heartbeat; he was witty and played off the regular panel well.

We finally found out who Cluedle-doo is, and it was…”clucking” shocking to say the least. Let’s get to the rest of the regular contestants before we talk poultry:

Song: “Celebration” by Kool and the Gang

Thoughts: It was a good performance, but not my favorite. Everyone has been stepping up their game to win that Golden Mask, but it felt like his performance fell short.

My Guess: I still think this is Omarion. The clues really didn’t help me this week, but his voice is making it more obvious that it’s him.

Judges’ Guesses: Darius guessed this is Sisqo, Ken guessed this is Justin Bieber, and Nicole guessed this is J-Bug (or Boog, depending on how you pronounce it).

Black Swan

Song: “Tequila” by Dan & Shay

Thoughts: I really like how this contestant transforms songs into great covers. The song she performed was a country song, but I didn’t get the sense that it was, which was a little bit of a relief for me (FYI, I’m not a huge fan of country music).

My Guess: I think it is still JoJo. Again, the clues were not really helpful in guiding me to guessing her, except for the #1 clue. Her debut single, “Leave (Get Out)” peaked at #1 when she came onto the scene.

Judges’ Guesses: Robin guessed this is Carly Rae Jepsen, Darius guessed this is Alanis Morrissette, and Ken guessed Bjork. Really, Ken? You’ve been more logical this season, but it’s like you took a couple of steps back with that guess.

Song: “Oh Boy” by Cam’ron ft. Juelz Santana

Thoughts: I was really impressed with this performance, and Chameleon continues to surprise me. It felt as if I was at a concert.

My Guess: I’m positive it’s Wiz Khalifa. He continues to refer to his parent’s military background and the fact that he moved around a lot as a kid, which is true of Wiz Khalifa. I’m not sure about the connection he has to Darius Rucker, but I’m sure it’s true.

Judges’ Guesses: Jenny guessed this is Riff Raff, Darius guessed this is Larry Fitzgerald, and Ken guessed this is 2 Chainz.

Song: “Bruises” by Lewis Capaldi

Thoughts: I wasn’t impressed with the beginning of the performance, but as it continued, I changed my mind. Piglet came to win, that’s for sure, and I wouldn’t be mad about it.

My Guess: Nick Lachey. Nick Lachey. Nick Lachey. I don’t need clues, just the voice.

Judges’ Guesses: Jenny guessed this is Drew Lachey, Darius guessed this is Tim McGraw, and Ken guessed this is Joel Madden. Judges, stop diverting from the Nick Lachey guess. Stick with it.

The Cluedle-doo strikes again to…mess up some stuff. He was ready to reveal his identity, but wanted to show off his talent to give the audience and panel a clue about who he is (it didn’t help me; I’m too young to understand the initial hype that was this rabble rouser’s boy band). He performed “Return of the Mack” by Mack Morrison, and I thought it was good.

For the love of God, judges…Jamie Foxx is not on the show. Robin and Nicole guessed that Cluedle-doo is Jamie Foxx, while Darius and Ken guessed this is Kevin James and Jenny guessed it was Akon. This was the most shocking reveal I’ve ever seen, but I did see it coming. It was…Donnie Wahlberg, Jenny’s husband! I came across a YouTube video last week that spelled out how this could be Donnie Wahlberg (link to the video is below), which didn’t convince me, but put the thought into my head. Once I saw the promo ad for this week’s episode in which Jenny McCarthy practically fainted, it confirmed for me that this was in fact Donnie Wahlberg.

Okay, but now for the real contestant’s elimination. Unfortunately, Yeti was left out in the cold, which was slightly surprising. Earlier performances of his made me believe he could win the whole thing, but his performances became weaker as the weeks went on. The first impression guesses were pretty good: Robin initially guessed that this was Omarion, Jenny initially guessed this is Mario, Ken initially guessed this is Justin Bieber, and Nicole initially guessed that this is Jason Derulo. Robin remained convinced this was Omarion and Ken stayed with his answer of Justin Bieber (yeah, right). Jenny changed her guess to Ne-Yo, and Nicole changed her guess to Mario.

The mask was revealed, and the Yeti was…Omarion! It’s interesting to see how much some of these celebrities of yesteryear have aged in the last 10, 20 or more years, and this was the case with Omarion for me.

The finals will be a vocal bloodbath next week. I would be satisfied with any of them taking the title. I’ve been partial to Black Swan because she has such a strong voice, but Piglet and Chameleon are talented as well. It’s really anyone’s game to take at this point.
